- Description
If you have built a solid grounding in commercial insurance and enjoy working with SME clients, this role gives you the chance to broaden that experience across both day-to-day commercial business and specialist schemes.
Based in Leicester and paying £25,000-£35,000 depending on experience, the position would suit an Account Handler who is comfortable managing renewals, dealing with clients and insurers, and taking ownership of a varied workload. You will have support around you, but you will also be trusted to manage your own cases properly rather than simply processing transactions.
The opportunity
This is a varied SME and schemes role covering commercial insurance clients with differing requirements, from straightforward package business through to risks placed within established scheme arrangements.
You will work closely with clients, insurers and colleagues to make sure renewals are handled thoroughly, new business opportunities are progressed efficiently and cover remains appropriate as businesses change.
For somebody currently working in an SME Account Handler, Commercial Account Handler or insurance broking role, it offers a useful opportunity to develop broader market knowledge while gaining more exposure to schemes business.
What the role involves
You will take responsibility for the day-to-day servicing of an established portfolio, supporting clients throughout the policy year and making sure renewals are prepared well in advance.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing renewals, mid-term adjustments and general servicing across a portfolio of SME commercial clients.
- Handling business placed through specialist insurance schemes alongside more traditional commercial insurance risks.
- Gathering and reviewing client information before approaching insurers for renewal or new business terms.
- Preparing insurer presentations and ensuring risk information is clear and complete.
- Liaising with insurers regarding quotations, coverage, policy terms and documentation.
- Speaking directly with clients to answer queries and explain cover in straightforward terms.
- Reviewing renewal and policy documentation for accuracy.
- Working with colleagues to identify opportunities to improve cover or introduce additional products where genuinely relevant.
- Maintaining accurate records and making sure work is progressed within agreed timescales.
Who this role could suit
- You are likely to have experience within commercial insurance broking, ideally involving SME clients. You may currently be an SME Account Handler, Commercial Account Handler, Insurance Broker or an Assistant Account Handler ready to take on greater responsibility.
- Experience with commercial combined, property, liability, motor fleet, tradesman, shops, offices or similar SME insurance would all be useful. Previous schemes experience would be helpful, although it is not essential if you already have a good grounding in commercial insurance and want to develop in that area.
- The role should particularly suit somebody who likes variety and wants to understand the client and risk rather than working in a purely transactional environment.
Why consider it?
- A good SME Account Handler role should give you enough variety to keep developing without leaving you constantly overloaded or dealing with business that sits beyond your current experience without support.
- Here, you will have exposure to both mainstream SME commercial insurance and schemes, giving you the opportunity to strengthen your technical knowledge while becoming more confident dealing directly with clients and insurers.
- The Leicester location also makes this a practical move for somebody already working within the East Midlands insurance market who wants broader experience without needing to move into a sales-led role.
Salary and benefits
- Basic salary of £25,000-£35,000, depending on experience.
- Exposure to both SME commercial insurance and schemes business.
- An established client portfolio to service and develop.
- Support from experienced broking colleagues.
- Scope to build broader commercial insurance knowledge.
- A clear opportunity to progress as your technical experience develops.
