- Description
This is not a position where you will inherit a mature book and spend most of your time servicing existing clients. The focus is firmly on development, creating opportunities, building relationships and converting new business across the commercial insurance market.
You will have the backing of an established broking business, but the success of the role will come from your ability to create momentum in your own territory and develop a sustainable pipeline over time.
The opportunity
This role would suit someone who enjoys the commercial side of broking and wants to be rewarded for building something of their own.
You will be responsible for identifying and winning new commercial clients, developing relationships with business owners and senior decision-makers, and working closely with internal broking and technical teams to put the right solutions in place.
You will be starting with a relatively clean slate, so this is best suited to someone who is comfortable prospecting, networking, asking for referrals and generating opportunities rather than relying on a substantial inherited portfolio.
What the role looks like
Your responsibilities will include:
- Generating new commercial insurance opportunities through prospecting, networking, referrals and introducer relationships.
- Building and managing your own pipeline from initial contact through to conversion.
- Developing relationships with SME and mid-market businesses.
- Understanding client risks and working with internal broking teams to structure suitable insurance programmes.
- Presenting proposals and leading new business conversations with prospective clients.
- Building long-term client relationships after conversion and identifying further opportunities for growth.
- Developing a strong local presence across Surrey and the surrounding market.
- Maintaining accurate pipeline information and delivering against agreed new business targets.
Who this could suit
- You are likely to have a strong background in commercial insurance and could currently be working as an Account Executive, Development Executive, Commercial Broker or in a similar client-facing role.
- You will need to be comfortable with the full new business process and have the confidence to approach prospects, open doors and create opportunities independently.
- Previous experience of building a commercial insurance book would be a clear advantage, although someone with strong broking experience and the right commercial mindset could also be considered.
- Most importantly, you should be self-motivated, credible with business owners and able to build relationships without relying on a heavily managed sales structure.
The business
- You will be joining an established commercial insurance brokerage with a strong market presence, broad insurer relationships and access to specialist expertise.
- The environment should appeal to someone who wants the scale and resources of a larger business without losing the autonomy to build their own client base and develop relationships in their own way.
- There is also a strong emphasis on professional development and long-term career progression for people who can demonstrate consistent commercial growth.
Package and working pattern
- The salary is around £60,000 depending on experience, alongside a wider benefits package and performance-related earning potential.
- The role can be based from either Staines or Redhill, with an expectation of around one to two days per week in the office.
- The remainder of the week can be spent working remotely, meeting prospects and developing relationships across your market.
The next step
If you are an experienced commercial insurance professional who wants a role where new business is genuinely the main focus, rather than an add-on to account management, it would be worth a confidential conversation.
I can talk you through the expectations around growth, the support available and the type of market you would be developing before you decide whether you want to take it any further.
