- Description
A well-established UK insurance business is looking to appoint a Senior Underwriter into its specialist liability team, based in Birmingham. This is a newly created opportunity within an established underwriting function, designed to strengthen underwriting quality, portfolio performance and long-term strategy rather than drive volume.
This Senior Underwriter role sits within a stable and well-run insurance business with an existing, profitable portfolio. The focus is on specialist casualty and liability risks that are often niche, complex and non-standard. This is not a transactional or high-volume insurance role and will appeal to underwriters who enjoy technical decision-making and genuine ownership of outcomes.
The Opportunity
The business writes specialist liability insurance, handling risks that require judgement, experience and technical confidence. The Senior Underwriter will play a key role in shaping how the portfolio is managed and developed, working closely with brokers and internal stakeholders.
This opportunity will suit:
An experienced Senior Underwriter specialising in liability insurance, or
A commercial combined underwriter with a strong liability background looking to move into a more specialist insurance role
Why This Senior Underwriter Role Exists
The portfolio is well established, but the business is investing in the next phase of growth. Rather than increasing volume, the focus is on clearer underwriting appetite, selective product development and improved portfolio management.
This Senior Underwriter role has been created to influence underwriting decisions, challenge submissions and raise overall underwriting standards across the insurance book.
The Role - Senior Underwriter (Insurance)
As a Senior Underwriter, you will:
Underwrite a portfolio of specialist casualty and liability insurance risks, including complex and non-standard cases
Take ownership of larger, technically challenging underwriting decisions
Act as a senior referral point on coverage, pricing, terms and risk selection
Work closely with brokers and external stakeholders to improve submission quality
Play an active role in portfolio management, including pricing, claims trends and retention
Support underwriting strategy, product refinement and governance within the insurance function
Contribute to policy wording development and coverage enhancements
Share technical expertise and support the development of junior underwriters
Have the option to move into a people-management role as the team grows (not mandatory)
What They're Looking For
An experienced Senior Underwriter with strong liability insurance experience
Background as a specialist underwriter or from a commercial combined insurance role
Confidence handling complex and non-standard liability risks
Comfortable dealing directly with brokers and stakeholders
A quality-led, portfolio-focused underwriting mindset
ACII or equivalent insurance qualifications are advantageous but not essential
Location & Working Pattern
This Senior Underwriter role is based in Birmingham, with hybrid working (typically two days per week in the office). The Birmingham location is commutable from Coventry, Warwick, Leamington Spa, Stratford-upon-Avon, Bromsgrove, Redditch, Northampton, Banbury, Alcester and surrounding areas.
What's On Offer
A senior, autonomous Senior Underwriter position within a respected insurance business
Exposure to interesting and specialist liability insurance risks
The opportunity to influence underwriting strategy and portfolio performance
Optional progression into management as the team expands
Competitive salary, annual bonus and strong pension
A stable insurance employer with low staff turnover and a long-term outlook
This Senior Underwriter opportunity in Birmingham will suit someone who wants to focus on proper underwriting within insurance - either deepening specialist casualty expertise or moving away from broad commercial combined underwriting into a more technical liability role.
Confidential discussions welcomed.
