- Description
If you are an experienced Senior Construction Liability Underwriter who enjoys building business rather than simply inheriting a mature book, this role offers the chance to take ownership of a new regional proposition with genuine backing behind it.
The wider construction and engineering portfolio is already long established, with a strong regional distribution network and an existing book across areas such as CAR and other Construction risks. The next stage is to build out the liability risks, with a proposal to commence underwriting from 1st January
The opportunity for a Senior Construction Liability Underwriter
This is a Senior Underwriter position focused on SME and commercial Construction Liability business across the UK regions.
The initial book will be made up of accounts typically paying between £5,000 and £100,000 in premium, with the likely emphasis towards the lower and mid-range end of that spectrum. The first-year ambition is sensible, yet the environment is commercially focused rather than heavily KPI-driven.
You will be the main technical underwriting lead for Construction Liability, but you will not be operating in isolation. There is an established regional business development team supporting distribution, alongside existing underwriting colleagues who can assist with opportunities across the market.
What you will be doing as a Senior Construction Liability Underwriter
Your role will include:
- Underwriting new SME and commercial Construction Liability business across the regions.
- Assessing risks, pricing business and setting appropriate terms and conditions.
- Working with brokers to develop a sustainable regional portfolio.
- Supporting the development of the Construction Liability proposition from launch.
- Providing practical underwriting input on policy wording, extensions and coverage considerations.
- Working closely with regional business development colleagues to identify and convert suitable opportunities.
- Helping shape appetite and underwriting approach as the book develops.
- Building strong broker relationships across the Midlands, North West and wider regional market.
What we are looking for
- This role will suit someone with established Construction Liability underwriting experience who understands the regional SME and commercial market.
- You should be comfortable underwriting Employers' Liability and Public Liability exposures within construction risks and have enough technical experience to make confident decisions without needing a rigid framework around you.
- You do not need to be a wording specialist, but you should be able to review policy wording from an underwriting perspective and identify where extensions, amendments or improvements may be appropriate.
- The business is looking for someone experienced enough to take ownership, work collaboratively with brokers and internal colleagues, and help establish a credible Construction Liability offering from the outset.
Location and salary
- The role can be based anywhere across the UK regions, with a preference for candidates located around the Midlands through to the North West.
- The salary is up to £85,000, with some flexibility towards £90,000 for an exceptional candidate with particularly strong and relevant Construction Liability underwriting experience.
The next step
This is likely to appeal to an underwriter who already has a solid position in the market but would value the chance to have more influence over how a portfolio develops.
If you would like to understand more about the underwriting appetite, regional broker strategy and how the role will work in practice, get in touch for a confidential conversation. You can explore the opportunity properly before deciding whether it is worth taking any further.
